Curriculum
The curriculum is a developmentally appropriate
program for preschool and elementary-aged children.
Classroom teachers design a variety of
activities that encourage the child’s spiritual, social, emotional,
physical, and intellectual development. The elementary curriculum is
a challenging academic curriculum that balances hands-on learning
experiences with strong, goal-oriented instruction.
Parents are encouraged to attend
meetings that provide additional information, such as Curriculum
Night, Parent Coffees, All School meetings, and Parent/Teacher
conferences. Additional curriculum information is available as part
of the registration packet.
SCSNA is
fortunate to have a very talented and energetic faculty. Teachers
provide rich and meaningful learning experiences for the children. In
addition to this classroom instruction, children attend specialty
classes. Preschoolers attend Chapel, Music, Gymnastics and Elementary
students attend Chapel, Music, Physical Education and Spanish.
Chapel:
Chapel introduces foundational Biblical truths to children through
songs of worships and praise, Bible stories, scripture memory verses
and prayer. These components are reinforced by American Sign
Language, creative props, repetitiveness and integration. Our
prayerful goal is for love, reverence and joy for God and his Son
Jesus Christ to be knit into children’s hearts.
Gymnastics:
The children are encouraged to use their gross motor skills in a fun
and challenging environment. We use music and basic gymnastics
equipment to create a program that teaches balance, coordination,
basic gymnastics moves, and large motor skills.
Physical
Education:
Kindergarten has P.E. once per week. All other
elementary students have P.E. twice per week.
The program focuses on balance,
coordination, and various large motor skills.
Children learn the value of cooperation
through involvement in individual and team sports.
They are encouraged to exercise as a
lifestyle and learn to view exercise as an integral part of healthy
living.
Music:
Children have many opportunities to build self esteem and reinforce
many academic skills through music. The music curriculum is designed
to provide appropriate music instruction beginning with the preschool
classes. Children play singing games, enjoy finger plays and develop
rhythm. As the children get older, they begin to develop a singing
voice and explore the elements of music, such as pitch and timbre. The
children play musical instruments, which promote rhythm and important
listening skills. In the elementary grades, children learn music
theory, simple composition and more
advanced experimentation with instruments and choir.
Spanish:
Elementary children in grades 1-3 participate in Spanish lessons twice
weekly. Kindergarten participates once weekly. This introduction to a foreign language is a wonderful
way to expose children to our diverse world.
Technology:
Our standards are aligned with the knowledge sequence recommended by
state and national organizations, such as the
International Society of Technology
in Education (ISTE) and local school districts with adjustments
based on our curriculum and available technology. Technology
Benchmarks are available for each grade from kindergarten through
third grade.
